Today is the first day of the 2010 edition of the annual SXSW Film, Interactive and Music festival in Austin, Texas. This otherwise sustainable conference is blighted by the fact that it’s organisers insist on giving attendees a ‘Big Bag’ of schwag—a tote bag full of magazines, flyers and stickers (and a free gift that is more or less a bribe, encouraging you to pick up this optional offering). These bags are typically transported to hotel rooms across the city soon after they’ve been forced on their unwitting owners, before being dumped in bins before everyone heads back to the airport. Should you end up going to all three conferences, you’ll no doubt find yourself the owner of three such bags. You can read more about these bags on Paul’s blog.
With this in mind, and with the (possibly slim) hope that we can encourage a few of this years attendees to think about the consequences of accepting a bags of useless marketing material, we’ve created a series of posters. Please feel re-blog or tweet them at will, or perhaps even add one as a wallpaper for your iPhone!
